Missouri Rethinks Ethanol Requirement
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Good news in the old neighborhood. The Missouri House is holding hearings to see if Missouri’s 10% ethanol requirement needs to be repealed, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The study compared Missouri’s average gasoline price in 2007 to the average price of E-10. In that year, the difference was about 8 cents per gallon. The [...]

In Italy, Oil Power Shifts to Coal
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Reuters reports that one of Italy’s electricity producers is shifting its power plant from oil to coal. The move is sparking protests, even though Enel has promised to use clean coal technologies.
Enel, like many electricity companies, says it has little choice but to build coal plants to replace aging infrastructure, particularly in countries like Italy, [...]

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

KFUO broadcasts and archives services from three churches in the St. Louis this morning. A couple of days ago Pastor Weedon tipped readers that Rev. Todd Wilken, former host of Issues, Etc., would preach from the pulpit of Peace Lutheran in St. Louis.
KFUO doesn’t have the archive of the worship service yet, but Peace Lutheran’s [...]

Pastor Storck officiated over the baptism of two children before moving to LSB Divine Service I, with Holy Communion. The hymns were:

Opening: 909, Christ Is [...]

Update: The name of the National Forest has been corrected.
Having visited Arches National Park in Moab, UT, nearly three years ago, this weekend I went for colder climes: the 11,000-foot Grand Mesa National Forest, just east of Grand Junction, CO.
My route took me east past Palisade, then south past the Powderhorn ski resort and into [...]

A Pro-Choice Article NOT On the Kook Fringe
Saturday, April 19th, 2008

On the Civil Religion blog of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kim Wallis posts several things about her pro-choice thinking which bear analysis.
Right off the bat, though, she starts with a blanket statement about her side that is refuted by evidence:
And I just want to put this out there: nobody is pro-abortion. Regardless of when you [...]

Good For You to Do
Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Listening to Rev. Wilken’s monologue on vocation reminded me of a recent conversation with the older daughter.
We were in the kitchen unpacking from the Cleveland trip: Mom, myself, and the older daughter. I had asked her to do something simple, taking something upstairs. She got mad and started crying, then angrily said, “You always give [...]

So much for stare decisis or any consistency of law.
The Volokh Conspiracy reports that in a concurring opinion of the recently decided Baze vs. Rees case (PDF) Justice Antonin Scalia responds to Justice John Paul Stevens’s view that the death penalty always violates the Eighth Amendment.
