Brushes with Famous People
Friday, March 30th, 2007

From the e-mailbox:
Dan,
Have you met any famous people while traveling?
Answer: Yes, but not many.

I didn’t recognize Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey at first, but it hit me after I saw the Gunnery Sergeant and the History Channel lapel pins on his world-abused leather jacket. Sgt. Ermey hosts Mail Call on the History Channel.
We both [...]

.XXX TLD Rejected
Friday, March 30th, 2007

BBC News reports that ICANN has refused once again to establish a .XXX three-letter domain (TLD). Good for them.
jWinters asks the question as to whether Christians should be happy or sad about porn having its own corner on the Internet. I commented that the .XXX domain was bad for several reasons. Check out the seminarian’s [...]

Ohio Votes on Military Pullouts
Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Ohio’s U.S. Senators voted today on H.R. 1951, the “emergency” supplemental appropriations bill that stipulates a pull-out date and some major pork (PDF).
H.R. 1951 passed the Senate as amended 51-47-2. Republicrat Voinovich voted for military deadlines, Democrat Brown voted against. Go figure.
The bill had passed the House 218-212 with one abstention and 3 [...]

Low-Grade Coal Makes Cheap Boiler Fuel
Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

CNet News.com reports that a company will produce industrial fuel from low-grade coal at about $40/bbl initially. After economies of scale kick in, that cost drops to $15/bbl.
The key to the process is that almost no one wants low-grade brown coal, which is about half water. Instead, coal miners and consumers concentrate on anthracite coal, [...]

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

ABC News reports that the University of Michigan’s psychology department is hosting a research effort to determine if people are more likely to commit aggression if religion says it’s ok.
The study compares two different universities, one in Holland where “27 percent believe in the Bible,” and Brigham Young University, where “99 percent said they believe [...]

The English Have Bank Issues, Too
Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Over here we have subprime lenders who assume that there were a lot more customers who could jump salary bands in two years than turned out to be. In England, there apparently is such demand for funds that one bank will pretend a lender will live to 127, UPI reports.
BRIGHTON, England, March 25 (UPI) — [...]

Lutheran Carnival XLVI: Is IT in You?
Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Seminarian Jay Winters hosts the forty-sixth edition of the Lutheran Carnival. He had the privilege of serving as vicar at the church of Dr. Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade. I am enjoying the temporary shift of famous Lutherans from primarily theological giants to vocational giants.
Thanks, jW, for your hard work and for your informative [...]

Some Good Use of YouTube
Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Jaysun the TheologyGeek pointed me to a series of video recordings on YouTube published by user nschaub. Pastor Ernie Lassman has 74 videos of basic Christian instruction which are good not only for studying theology but in basic study of instruction.
From the samples I’ve seen, Lassman is confident with his material and except for the [...]
