Necessary Roughness

two kingdoms, hundreds of thousands of miles

Archive for April, 2006

Indeed, I am again 50 miles from Iuka this evening. The brew will have to sit for another time. I fought strong winds all the way from St. Louis.
This time we holed up in the Hilton Garden Inn in Effingham for about $10 more than the Holiday Inn Express. My Diamond VIP got us a [...]

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Liberty, MO, during our visit to Kansas City. The Holiday Inn closest to my parents was booked solid. This “free” trip turned out even better than expected: For 10,000 points a night I could choose between standard smoking, standard non-smoking, or two queen beds in a non-smoking [...]

Democrat Proposes Tax Holiday?
Thursday, April 27th, 2006

AP reports that Senate Republicans want to cut everyone a $100 check while a Senate Democrat wants to give everyone a 60-day tax holiday.
The “rebate” check idea is goofy. I can blow a $100 check on two tanks of gas, and then life goes on.
The tax holiday idea, even though it may actually benefit less [...]

A Visit to KC Gymnastics
Thursday, April 27th, 2006

We got an invitation to visit KC Gymnastics in Riverside, MO. My parents, my two nephews, and the four of us went Wednesday.
Recently they had built a kids play set (on the website, the picture on the left) that was sturdy enough for adults. An incline with rock-climbing handholds led up to a platform where [...]

Crayola World
Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

This morning we headed down to Crown Center and visited Crayola World, the Crayola store and cafe. I learned a couple of things, such as in 1962 Crayola changed their “flesh” color to “peach”. Over 100 billion crayons have been sold.
Our favorite products are the Color Wonder series, which use some fun chemistry to make [...]

Rainbow in the Backyard
We saw a rainbow outside my parents’ house yesterday. This was the best picture out of several tries.

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in [...]

We passed Emma, Missouri, around 3:30pm Sunday. I could almost hear Pastor Walter Snyder, of Ask the Pastor, working hard on the next Lutheran Carnival.
Ask the Pastor has the 22nd edition of the Lutheran Carnival. Pastor Snyder is a proud dad who writes about his musical daughter.
Thanks, Pastor, for all you do. [...]

Effingham, IL, is almost the geographic midpoint between Columbus, OH, and Kansas City, MO. It is also the city we hit at 6pm Saturday, dinner time for the kids. Here we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
The service was friendly when we checked in; I got an immediate discount down to $71/room.
