Pr. Weedon reports that Rev. Dr. Jaroslav J. Vajda finally sleeps in God’s peace.
Rev. Vajda came to prominence as a hymn writer with his hymn “Now the Silence,” which first appeared in Worship Supplement (CPH, 1969). His hymns and translations biblically rooted and rich in imagery number more than 200 and can be found [...]

Choir Practice at Lutheran Church of Prayer
Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I visited Lutheran Church of Prayer in Bakersfield. Choir practice was being held, so I took the opportunity to check out the church and choir. The web site doesn’t do the building justice, so I’ll be taking the camera on Sunday.
The choir is not singing Sunday, but it is singing April 6. If work holds [...]

St. Patrick, Hymn Writer
Monday, March 17th, 2008

LSB 604 is “I Bind unto Myself Today.” (Cyberhymnal)
The words were written by St. Patrick of Ireland in the fourth or fifth century and translated into English in the early 1800’s. With theologically specific lyrics backed up by “St. Patrick’s Breastplate,” it was no wonder why he was able to baptize thousands and spread Christianity [...]

Chanting in Woodland
Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

This morning I attended Bible Study and Divine Service at St. Paul’s in Woodland, CA.
The study was lay-led, working from “Galatians” from NavPress.
The service was LW Divine Service II, setting one. A couple of LSB hymns were printed, “Voices Raised to You We Offer” (LSB 795) and “The Lamb, The Lamb” (LSB 547). I [...]

For “Duran Duran’s Red Carpet Massacre,” the group parted ways with guitarist Andy Taylor but collaborated with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland in producing their latest album. NR Wife gave me the deluxe edition for Christmas, and it’s a good gift.
The first track, “The Valley,” is dance-floor-friendly, nearly 5 minutes long and full of instrumentals. The [...]

A Christ-mass After All
Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

I had known that I would sing the first verse of Stille Nacht during the late Christmas Eve service for several weeks. I became a little concerned when I was informed I would solo (chant) the Opening Versicles and the Phos Hilaron of the Evening Prayer service, both the Pastor’s part and the Congregation’s Part. [...]

Singing for Christmas
Sunday, December 9th, 2007

This morning was pretty cool: Divine Service III with Holy Communion and five baptisms.
After the service I was told that I would be singing Stille Nacht for the nearly midnight service on Christmas Eve. It had been hinted to me before, but this was the first time I knew for sure.
I’ve sung in [...]

And Crown Him Lord of All
Sunday, November 11th, 2007

The second Sunday our church had the Lutheran Service Book, Divine Service III was used. I tried to explain to my older daughter that this was the same music I sang as a kid, as well as my parents, my mom’s parents, etc. Unfortunately she found a new friend in the pew in front of [...]
