I don’t watch much Survivor, but since we all had one TV to us in our hotel room I did this time.

The final immunity competition came down to a tie, and the tie breaker would be decided by who could build a fire that would burn through suspended twine.

The two ladies in the tie breaker went to work. After an hour of striking a lot of sparks with flint and steel, neither had success. They were given matches. One lady exhausted her box of matches, while the winner finally got her fire burning enough in another 30 minutes.

Wow.

I bet my brother is thinking the same thing I am: “20 seconds. 60 if the bird’s nest is wet.”

The sparks weren’t the issue. They had plenty of sparks. None seemed to catch on the twine that is supposed to be spread out into a “bird’s nest.” When they had their bad beginning I thought the wood was wet, but when they went to matches and lit the twine, there was no smoldering. That was dry twine.

Both ladies had to dismantle their original tepees. It looked like they didn’t have enough small wood, just the larger sticks that mere yarn won’t light. That’s why the winner took another half hour, finally figuring out that point. Her fire finally looked good and eventually burned through the suspended twine.

But any Scout would be ashamed of that performance. :)
