When a pastor/priest changes denominations to Roman Catholicism, that person is often said to be “crossing” or “swimming” the Tiber. If they leave their denomination for Eastern Orthodoxy, they swim the Bosporus, where Constantinople (not yet Istanbul) was built. Would a new Lutheran swim the Elbe?
