Wednesday night was Christian Education Night at Memorial. I got there early so that Pastor Murray could sign my copy of his book. I’ll report on the book after I’ve finished reading it.
Next was the class run by the vicar. We’ve been doing an in-depth study of the Lord’s Prayer. There is good discussion, which comes at the cost of going through the study at a snail’s pace.
The vicar concluded the study by saying the Lord’s Prayer, pausing after each petition to let us think about what each means to us.
TLH Vespers followed with a familiar hymn from LW, so I was able to sing the bass line. I’m still adjusting to the warm humidity down here, so that helped my low range.
After Vespers I chatted a little with Cantor Janet Muth, who was on the Hymnody Committee for the Lutheran Service Book. I brought up my qualms about the psalm tones and the single-melody lines mentioned in last Saturday’s post. Cantor Muth said that they moved the psalm tones to the front of the psalms because some congregations like to take one psalm tone and sing it for all the psalms through a whole season. As for the 20% single-melody hymns, some are actually chants, such as “We All Believe in One True God” (LSB 954).
