This week I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Duncan. The nicest hotel is the Chisholm Suites hotel, but they don’t participate in any frequent stay programs.

The $53 room was clean and had a refrigerator. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows resisted my efforts to flatten them. The TV had over 40 channels, including Sci Fi. The room had a proper thermostat and capable A/C; housekeeping had it cranked to 50 degrees while I was out one day. Instant meat locker. I had to hunt all over the room for enough outlets to handle all my chargers and laptop power supply. The desk chair needed more padding.

Internet broadband access was weak, literally. The hotel had wireless, but I was on the back side of the building and had a weak signal. I had to dial-in with modem, which at least gave me a good modem connection around 40k.

The bathroom was functional except for the toilet; I had to ensure several times that the gasket was closing so that the tank would fill up. The shower head offered multiple settings, but it was difficult to turn.

An indoor pool and sauna were available, along with a pool table, in their version of a Holidome. There was no exercise equipment. The hotel used to have Continental Breakfast years ago when I had stayed before, but it seems that is gone.

Parking was adequate, but access was limited due to Highway 81’s divided highway. If I recall correctly they prohibited U-turns at intersections, making northbound entrance and egress difficult.

There’s an adjacent restaurant, “Hero’s”, which is an fair Tex-Mex restaurant. They charged my boss $5 for a mug of Shiner Bock. They gave the reason that Oklahoma’s beer is 3.2% (w/w) and charged at normal prices, while stronger beer gets surcharges. I’m guessing mudslides would be cost-prohibitive.

A lot of Holiday Inns, including Duncan, are more motel than hotel, with direct exposure of hotel doors to the elements. There are some rooms indoors near their pool close to the lobby. If I stay again I would probably ask for one of these rooms to see if the wireless works better.
