Invariably it seems that when a football game goes into overtime and a team wins the coin toss and scores on the first possession, someone calls for Overtime Reform. Field goal kickers are so accurate that overtime is just a matter of the coin flip, they say.
Super Overtime has helped colleges I’ve rooted for in the past (2002 Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State over Miami), but I don’t like it. Even double overtime games can go until 1 a.m. Eastern for a prime time game. It reduces the incentive to win in regulation. Why bother having a clock? Let’s count number of series and turn this into baseball.
The Chiefs knew that Denver had Long Rifle Elam. Maybe they wanted to test his hip again, but he had already kicked two field goals. I would have hoped that Coach Herman Edwards was telling his team to “play to win the game!” They just didn’t get it done. They now have a bye week for Trent Green to get better and to figure out ways to get Larry Johnson into the end zone.

Dan!
I couldn’t agree more. If you play 60 minutes and can’t get it done, there’s no crying allowed if you lose in sudden death. Period. That’s the breaks. And college OT is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

You know, I’m a Bronco fan so I like the outcome, however, after a game played that poorly, I think both teams should just get a mark in the loss column so fans don’t have to be subjected to any more offensive futility than they already have.

I hear you. At this point the AFC West has turned from the hardest division in the NFL to the Chargers and a bunch of also-rans. I hope the play picks up for our sanity’s sake.

I’m not even sold on the Chargers yet. Look at who they played so far!
