AP reports that Senate Republicans want to cut everyone a $100 check while a Senate Democrat wants to give everyone a 60-day tax holiday.

The “rebate” check idea is goofy. I can blow a $100 check on two tanks of gas, and then life goes on.

The tax holiday idea, even though it may actually benefit less financially, has more intellectual leverage. If that happens, one can post in every gas station, “Today gas is cheaper because the federal government isn’t taking 18.4 cents from every gallon you pump. The Ohio state government is still taking 26 cents.”

Given the two, I’d take the latter. Highlight a problem and propose a fix, rather than buy off the public and keep things status quo.

“Status quo, you know, is Latin for ‘the mess we’re in’.” —Ronald Reagan
