Effingham, IL, is almost the geographic midpoint between Columbus, OH, and Kansas City, MO. It is also the city we hit at 6pm Saturday, dinner time for the kids. Here we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express

The service was friendly when we checked in; I got an immediate discount down to $71/room.

We got a room with two queen beds, which were both firm and comfortable. The television had around 70 channels, including most if not all the popular ones. The room was quite small, with no room for exercising.

The sink was outside the bathroom and didn’t leave much room to air-dry the kids’ sippy cups. The bathroom itself was just large enough for a standard tub and toilet. The hot water was hot enough to scald. I had to adjust the valve under the sink at one point.

We swam in the heated indoor pool. The hotel provided some beach balls to play with. The fitness room had a treadmill, an elliptical, a nautilus, and a TV, but I didn’t see if any worked.

The lobby consistently baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies which were quite good, and the staff also provided popcorn. The hotel has the standard H.I.E. “smart” continental breakfast. A microwave was available when the buffet was staffed.

Our staff couldn’t provide a refrigerator in our room, and they had neglected to clean out the coffee pot. When notified, the front desk provided a clean coffee pot from another room.

Parking was all around the hotel. The hotel staff had suggested the wrong door for us to get to our room, but thankfully the error didn’t result in a much longer walk. Construction in front of the street which led to our hotel made for a nice mess.

We were a little grossed out by the coffee pot and disappointed by the lack of a refrigerator, but the pool was fun and the hotel was relatively cheap for a walk-in stay. We may end up staying at the hotel again on the way back, but the neighboring Hilton Garden Inn looks pretty good too.
