The Kansas City Star reports that voters approved renovations to Arrowhead Stadium and Kaufman Stadium and rejected funding the rolling roof.
At one point some feared the roof would be approved and the renovations wouldn’t. Voting that way seems silly to me. The fans would benefit every game from renovations and only benefit from the rolling roof when the weather was bad.
The insistence of the NFL in having a climate controlled football stadium for the Super Bowl also seems lame. Old school teams fought the elements as well as the opposing team. Cold or rainy weather might also reduce the occurrence of wardrobe malfunctions.
It also doesn’t reflect the way the games are played during the regular season; stadiums usually drain rain away from the field fast enough so that games are only called when there are safety issues such as lightning or tornadoes.
To keep residents of Jackson County from being completely fleeced, they get some fringe benefits for their sales tax:
Yet, there are some benefits to Jackson Countians for supporting the higher taxes. The Chiefs have agreed to waive the parking surcharge for county residents in some cases, while the Royals will offer two-for-one priced tickets to county residents to some games.
I understand how a rolling roof would bring the Super Bowl to Kansas City, but the idea became silly when the possibility was raised of an NCAA final four hosted at Arrowhead. Basketball in an semi-outdoor football stadium? Those would be some serious nose-bleed seats for a basketball game! “Hey, you with the binoculars! Did he jam it or lay it up?” Check out how the RCA Dome gets chopped up for basketball. Football and soccer I understand, but no basketball for Arrowhead, please. ![]()
