Before I drove to Fort Smith, I attended worship at my old home church in Duncan, OK. At the end of the early service the organist (who had been friends with my wife and I while we were here) asked if I would do a solo for the later service. I hadn’t done a solo in years.
She asked what I would like to sing on such short notice, so we grabbed TLH, thumbed to the Lent section, and “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” caught my eye. Of course. We ran through it a couple of times, and I decided to do verses 1, 2, and 4. While I was singing I caught some nervous shakes. Oh well, I thought: at least I wouldn’t have to give the hymn tremolo.
One might think a sanctuary shaped like a shoebox wouldn’t provide good acoustics. Maybe it was because I was standing at one end and singing at a long sidewall at an angle, but it sounded nice and loud. I was flat on the last line of the first verse, but without Memorex it was easily forgotten. ![]()

I would have gone to church to hear you sing. I am sure you did a wonderful job.
