I drove south out of Duncan to see if there was anything still notable about the wildfires in southwest Oklahoma. My impromptu tour took me through some farmland: south on U.S. 81, west on Fuller Road, then north on 42nd back up to the new U.S. 7 bypass. I didn’t see any fires being fought.
I saw the steel frame of a barn being newly rebuilt, and another property was pouring cement for a new home’s foundation. I couldn’t get good pictures of those.

Edge of Burnt Field
For the most part I saw fields of burnt grass. The dry grass made it easy for the fire to spread. Inside the burnt areas, green grass was popping up through the ash. |

Gutted House
Most of the landowners did a good job protecting their houses, but this one wasn’t as fortunate. Several properties had burnt fields but standing homes. Ditches had been dug, and the dirt formed ridges acting as an additional firewall. |
