Last night I visited The Keller in Kastle, a wonderful German restaurant in Oklahoma City that I had not been to in years. What I had not remembered was that they were open only Thursday through Saturday. What I had not known at all was that they had been closed since New Years Eve for remodeling.

They opened back up tonight, and I was their first customer of the New Year. :)

The Keller in Kastle has a selection of about 25 beers and about as many wines. They had three reislings, and the waiter recommended the dry reisling, all of them being fruity to start with.

Pictures were taken with my phone, so they are grainy.

I started off with potato pancakes and applesauce. The pancakes were crispy and maintained their integrity even as they were easily cut with a fork. The applesauce was thick enough to be eaten with the small fork that came with the dish, but there were no clumps are large chunks. The warm pancakes and cool applesauce were quite yummy.

Next came the potato soup and salad plate. The potato soup was nice and thick, topped with bacon that was crispy yet pliable. The salad plate contained three salads. Fresh spinach was drizzled in ranch dressing. The green bean salad had a slight hint of onions. The carrot straws sweetened with raisins was a nice surprise.

While enjoying the pancakes, soup, and salad, I noticed the music, played from speakers set into the ceiling. The secular German songs varied in age and style: polka, soft rock, and even a little country.

The Wurstplatte contained bratwurst, knockwurst, and polish sausage. For my two sides I selected hot potato salad and sauerkraut.

The sausages were wonderful of course, but the sides were excellent. The potatoes in the potato salad were cubed, well-cooked yet solid. My mother’s family recipe calls for bacon and vinegar, but this was lightly sweet, an interesting change-up. The sauerkraut wasn’t pungent at all, as if the cabbage had most of its smell washed out. I could taste just the tiniest bit of vinegar in it. The sweet and sour sides complemented the wurst very well. The mustard also worked well and didn’t overpower.

I normally eat half as much as I ate tonight, but I had already worked out and was quite hungry. Yet after the main course, I regretfully informed the waiter that there was “no room for Strudel”. :)

I will likely visit The Keller in Kastle again in the next two weeks and some; hopefully bringing some friends next time. Any of you Kansans want to come down? :)
