This Washington Post article, “The Game and Love”, reports that older people are spending more and younger people are spending less on gifts for February 14. Analysis: “Something’s wrong at the pump — the gas pump, not the heart.” That’s right. Rising gas prices hit the 18-24 demographic hardest in February.

In order for a causal analysis between fuel spending and age to be relevant, I would have to pay more or less for gas because of my age. I’ve not seen an age discount yet for my bracket.

Those youngins have less income, the article says, so they can’t spend as much. What about other groups with less income? The article makes no mention of the over-54 demographic, whether or not they are spending more; I am willing to bet, because it would run counter to this article’s premise, that even though the over-54s may have less income, they aren’t spending less.

As for our young adults, what better way to alleviate the pain of high gas prices and show your boundless love at the same time than buying your honey gift certificates at your local gas station? As for me, I’ll stick to the normal fare of pretty things for her and cool useful things for me.
