Lee Penn has posted a lengthy article (hat tip: lewrockwell.com) in Spiritual Counterfeits Project magazine. I had never heard of this magazine before, but the article’s title is catchy to me. I’m still working on a Biblical basis of civil liberty. The answer may come in Luther’s “Two Kingdoms” theology, but I need to research this more.
The article presents an exhaustive history of the State’s use of war to revoke the liberties of its own citizens. It mentions the Alien and Sedition Act of 1798, President Lincoln’s suspension of habeas corpus, the Espionage Act of 1917, and the Sedition Act of 1918. It mentions the World War II internment of residents of Japanese ancestry, but the author could have benefited from reading what we know now. There is an emphasis of the erosion of liberty since the nineties, and of course it details the PATRIOT Act and future projects such as the Total Information Awareness System and PATRIOT II. Chip implants and other technologies are covered too.
“When the State Becomes God” is a must read, a Christian perspective on the loss of liberty made possible by a persistent state of war. It’s long and full of information, but it’s not preachy.
