Spain’s socialist government legalized same-sex unions today, joining Belgium and the Netherlands, with Canada working on it.
The term “gay marriage” to me is oxymoronic, like “jumbo shrimp”, or if you’re feeling humorous, “military intelligence” or “social security”.
There are some (link dead) who believe that God blesses a “gay marriage”. Those churches are in error not once but twice. Not only is there no blessing of such a union by God, this is an endorsement of purposeful and manifold sinful behavior. Theologically it is the same as rewarding priests for abusing children.
Faced with their obvious apostasy, I would imagine most homosexual couples would not seek marriage in a church but attempt to engage in contractual civil unions for insurance, tax, and property benefits. It is still deviant behavior, but at least the Church isn’t compounding the sin. I’m not in favor of “civil unions” either, but I find it more tolerable than the outright lie of a “gay marriage”.
Even athiests receive blessings of a marriage. The latter half of Matthew 5:45 states, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” We should reclaim the word “marriage” for the God-inspired definition it has.
For our civil society the lie is not the worst thing about “gay marriage” or “civil unions”. In some areas in this country there are already laws against discrimination by sexual orientation. Laws against discrimination harm freedom and ignore consequences of discrimination imposed by the marketplace. The acceptance of civil unions will only motivate lawyers further to go after organizations that discriminate according to moral behavior.
