The Christian Post reports that Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has signed a bill requiring ultrasounds and counseling for abortion seekers.
According to a 2004 study done by A Women’s Concern (AWC), an organization dedicated to “compassionate peer-counseling to women and couples who are making decisions about unintended pregnancies,” less than a fourth of women chose to pursue an abortion after they were given ultrasounds and made clear their available alternatives to abortion.“This bill is reflective of a national trend that recognizes the ability of ultrasound technology to provide mothers with the opportunity to see the development of their unborn child in real-time,” commented Mary Spaulding Balch, pro-life attorney an
This is intriguing. A full abortion ban, it is argued, forces seekers underground, but this keeps it out in the open and convinces 3 out of 4 moms to keep baby. Is discovery more effective than the ban?

I think that anything that is proven to reduce the abortion rate is a good thing. There is no reason that a child should have to die because of the sins of the mother. Also, there are a lot of good people out there who are anxiously awaiting a child to adopt. Every child is a blessing.
When I was in college, one of the professors I had required everyone in the class to watch a movie entitled, “If These Walls Could Talk.” It was about a number of different women who lived in the same house during different decades. None knew one another, and all had gotten pregnant a different way and were struggling with the decision of whether to get an abortion. Discussion after watching the movie led to the discovery that more deaths were reported amongst those who sought illegal abortions rather than when it was made legal, but that served, to me, as a very poor statistic to point to when those who were pro-choice stated that abortion should be legal.
What I gained from that movie, coupled with the article you mentioned, is that with counseling, fewer women will want to have abortions, and even fewer will die from trying to seek a way around laws. I still don’t like that abortion is legal in any way, shape or form, but if this is the “middle ground” we find, I’m glad that it’s been found.

This should be essential outreach of our churches. Its one of the reasons I am supportive of the Deaconess programs.

You know, one could also argue that making murder illegal forces murderers underground…what does that have to do with what is moral and how society should behave towards what is immoral? Noobs!
On the other hand, this is a good thing. It can help bring people back to reality when so much polemic is used by pro-choicers about the rights of the mother over and against the rights of her offspring…not just a blob of tissue or even a person…but your OFFSPRING….in a sense your familial and genetic IMMORTALITY.

And this by a DEMOCRAT. A pro-gun democrat at that.
What a guy!

Chris Heren:
I was thinking the exact same thing with respect to “making murder illegal.” A big difference it would seem is the potential post-natal murderer has already gotten past identifying his/her target as a person. Crazy, huh?

I was also thinking that. Now if he were to get on the right side of taxes and spending…
