It isn’t a day yet after the first announcement over the show’s cancellation, and there have been some very fine statements written by Pastors Asburry, Cwirla, Snyder, and others.
Jeff Schwarz’s home church, St. Paul’s in Hamel, IL, has set up a Wilken/Schwarz Fund. Online, the Wittenberg Trail social networking site is taking donations with PayPal.
Contact information has been published for the LCMS Board of Communication Service. They are keeping count of the number of calls to David Strand’s office, 314-996-1200. Your voice matters. There is also an online petition to sign.
Still more can be done. Many people, without the benefit of the Internet, still don’t know what is going on. If you have friends that listen to the show, call them.
Laymen should contact their pastors and elders; pastors, their parishioners. Perhaps the congregation can take up a special offering. Put a request for support in the church newsletter.
We do not know yet why this happened. On the extreme off-chance that there may have been a good reason for the show to be canceled, hold your criticism for the Synod and its politics. Let the magnitude of your support show how big a mistake this has been.
There have been efforts to recover the Issues, Etc., archives. There is also talk of taking the show independent, just over the Internet.
Radio is still an important medium. Every time I visit a new city and rent a car, I hit “Scan” to see what is being broadcast while I drive. We need Wilken and Schwarz back on the radio, so people can scan and serendipitously bump into good Christian radio.
My non-Lutheran friends may wonder, “Why care so much about a show?” For your answer I again refer to the Scan button on your radio. Issues, Etc., was everything generic American Evangelical radio was not. It was not promoting the state of Israel at all costs. It was not saying “God Damn America.” It was not a priest, a minister, and a rabbi getting together and trying provide different truths on one show. It was not please send one million dollars or else I’ll be called home. It was not saying your life is screwed up because you weren’t praying or giving enough.
Issues, Etc., challenged the listener, knowing that we were sinners and saints. It was not afraid to call good things good and evil things evil. It was funny, instructive, and an excellent example of proper application of the Word of God to today’s society. To lose Issues, Etc., is to surrender the radio spectrum to shows that give the Gospel a bad name. That is why we want this show back.

Dan,
I should point out that quite a few non-LCMS Lutherans and even NON-Lutheran Christians are extremely aggrivated by this action. James White’s “aomin.org” has expressed concern and sorrow…but that’s what you get when you cancel at the last minute a show that had quite a few guests on. Issues, Etc., while at times I disagreed with Fr. Wilken, was ahead of its time with regard to evangelism, catechizing, and ecumenism. It has had by far a greater and longer lasting effect on Christians of many stripes and I believe has and will continue God willing to have a much greater effect than Ablaze!(tm) can ever hope to have. Rather than hide behind a faulty Calvinistic assumption that all “Protestants” are the same, the program highlighted the differences and discussed them honestly and in a Christian manner with those we disagreed with.
Treating the church as a business has been shown to be faulty for over a decade…as usual, Lutheran leadership is behind the times, and thinking in terms of the church not as a divine institution, but as a man-made business. One can only hope that they will repent of their folly, or else I would wager that those who believe correctly concerning the ministry will revoke their divine authority, or view the LCMS as an invalid institution who would rather silence their proclaimers of the pure Gospel than to help in proclaiming it.
After calling David Strand’s office number (mailbox was full and no one answered), and sending an e-mail to the question area for the LCMS (and getting no reply), I am wagering to think that IF this was a political move….they VASTLY underestimated the support for those families who were instantly and negatively affected, and I really don’t think they want to deal with a Synod in full-blown schism mode. Many people who have been proud Lutherans are now not only NOT proud of the LCMS, but are considering leaving it. When you have Non-Lutherans criticizing this move…that should tell you that when one member of the body of Christ suffers, the rest suffer. I also do not think the “coincidence” of this event occurring on the day we celebrate the cleansing of the Temple by Our Lord will be lost either. However, I also remember another phrase said by the Christ, “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters” (Luke 11:23). If this move was against those who proclaim the Gospel of Christ…then perhaps another Reformation is in order.
If this is not a political move, then all can be amended with no hard feelings. But I sincerely hope that those in charge, “counted the cost.” In that however, I highly doubt it. Keep Fr. Wilken, Mr. Schwartz, AND our Synod continually in your prayers.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Financial help for the Schwarz and Wilken families can be sent to the following address. Just put in the memo line that it’s for the “Schwartz/Wilken Fund”. The Schwarzes especially need the help and Rev. Jack Schwarz’s wife Beth has been recently diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy and they need to go to Mayo Clinic to try figuring out what can be done.

Normally I really don’t like comments that are copied and spread across a ton of blogs, but I’ll make this one an exception since it does have a lot of info.

For a dark humor laugh, check out the videos I posted regarding this.

Thanks for pardoning my limited blog spamming, Dan. I also usually hate that, but I am trying to help get info out to everyone. …I will be continuing to post information and resources relating to the cancellation of Issues, Etc. and firing of Rev. Wilken and Mr. Schwarz. So, if you could please help me draw people to the resource of my blog, I would really appreciate it.
