When it’s government blue-on-blue, I can’t decide whether to laugh or cry.
The Kansas City Star reports that the State of Kansas is considering legislation to prevent Shawnee County and the city of Topeka from collecting sales taxes the state incurrs on the renovation of its capitol.
“I don’t think we need to be paying sales tax from one unit of government to another,” said Sen. Karin Brownlee, an Olathe Republican. “This is just one of the things that’s increasing the price of the project.”Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, an Independence Republican, said the state has always paid local sales tax when a state building is constructed.
Don’t we feel entitled. I wonder what kind of amenities would be sacrificed were the State to follow the law just like it always had before.
