Matins went pretty well this morning. I used a hymn new for the kids, LSB 434, “Lamb of God, Pure and Holy.” This hymn is growing on me. It is musically versatile, and the three verses repeat except for one phrase in the third verse, making it easy for non-readers to pick up.

The older daughter noticed we weren’t singing the Alleluias again. It is the custom of liturgical Christian churches to bury the Alleluia for Lent.

We did discuss the Gospel reading, which I pared down to John 3:16-17. I don’t yet need to guard against universalism in this house. :)

My older daughter at one point said, “Daddy, I need help remembering that Jesus died to save us.”

I smiled and said, “Yes, dear. We all do. This is why we go to church and do Matins and Vespers.” That’s something we can’t afford to forget.
