Whenever one of us is feeling too sick to go to church, we stay home at sing Matins out of the LSB. I also look at the 2008 Series A and pick verses to read.
This morning the Gospel is John 3:1-17, which includes the NFL-famous John 3:16.
It is unfortunate that John 3:18 is left out, because it’s really important:
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Some religious leaders, in an effort to be congenial and friendly to non-Christian neighbors, seem to ignore this verse, choosing instead to teach a form of Universalism. John 3:18 along with John 14:6 are major exclusive claims of the Christian faith.
In addition to condemning Universalism, this verse serves as a reminder to Christians and especially pastors that when you decide to “share your faith,” as it were, that you need to be teaching about condemnation and what the Son of God did to rescue you from it.
