It takes a lot for my daughters to surprise me any more.
This last week, whenever I sat at the piano, the younger requested “Jesus Loves Me.” When I have the Accompaniment to the Liturgy up, she follows the Lord’s Prayer with her finger, no doubt reading whole word after whole word. She knows that completely now (thanks to the Mrs.), but she wants prompting at the beginning of each line.
This evening, she started singing “I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb,” all three verses. She corrected me when I blew the first verse.
The older daughter has started singing the close of Vespers occasionally. She knows Luther’s Evening Prayer and the first part of Asking a Blessing out of the Small Catechism. She knows the first four Commandments, and we’re working on the rest.
So during dinner, when the younger daughter joined us in “Come, Lord Jesus…” for the first time, I was not surprised. Thankful. Hopeful. But not surprised. You go, girls.

Doesn’t it warm a father’s heart? The first time my daughter said the Lord’s Prayer all the way through hit me as amazing and a bit proud moment. Occasionally there is hope, like when they fold their hands at the communion rail or bow their heads during prayers. Those little moments help keep me going. Keep up the good work!
