Saturday night my big four-year-old went up the stairs with her drink, her Eeyore doll, and her cow, and laid in bed. I tucked her in.
We said our prayers, and as I began the Evening Prayer from the Small Catechism, I drew a cross on her forehead. She immediately said that felt good, and had me do it again throughout the Evening Prayer and Lord’s Prayer.
I don’t make her do it. If she wants to eventually, fine. We have the freedom to make the sign of the cross. We have the freedom not to make it. The sign of the cross and other actions are not trademarked by anyone. They don’t make anyone any holier, but they remind us that we are redeemed, even when we don’t feel very redeemed at all.

Nice post. I actually require my children to make the sign of the cross upon themselves, but I do not require that of my congregation. My thoughts are: I am the Parent, and it is my duty to teach the children how to worship God. Not making the sign of the cross is not sin but making it is Christian, is worshiping God with our bodies as well as our spirit, and is great comfort and consolation to us. Peace!

Excellent post here Dan! I agree with Chris Hall. I make the sign of the cross at every sermon.
