Necessary Roughness

For 19 days I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Brighton, CO. The nearest Holiday Inn was over a half hour away, so I thought I would try something closer. I do have a membership in the Choice Hotels frequent stay program, but one strike against that program is that the points expire. Guess I will have to spend 19 days worth of points.

I was originally given a handicapped room, but I was able to get a larger non-smoking room after a couple of days. The new room was pretty large, with good space for working out in the room. This was necessary because there was not a fitness room. The king-size bed, which was not pillow-topped, still kept shedding the fitted sheet. It was still comfortable. A wall unit handled the air conditioning capably.

The TV had more channels than I have seen in a long time, perhaps 70, including FitTV (again useful with no fitness room), SciFi, HBO, TSN (Canadian sports), and others. The refrigerator was half-height, but the microwave was small. The hotel has no room service, but the wings delivered from J.J.’s Wings weren’t bad. The free breakfast was continental, with a waffle iron and the standard set of breads.

The wireless internet worked well the first two weeks, as there is an access point on each floor. Last Sunday, a power outage knocked out the access points out, and they never got fixed for the rest of my stay. I could connect to the wireless internet of the hotel next door, but that was jammed whenever the air conditioner or the microwave was on. Only the wireless in the lobby worked reasonably. My phone was also knocked out the last three days of my stay, and it was also never fixed. I did tell the front desk about both issues right away.

The sink is outside the bathroom with good counter space. Water pressure and temperature for the sink and the shower were fine. The shower was reasonably roomy with a bowed curtain rod.

Comfort Inn tried two laundry companies with my clothes. Both performed well. One company was quite economical in large quantities: $8 for up to 8 pounds, then $1 each additional pound.

Access to the hotel is decent, but the hotel shares an entrance with the neighboring Sonic. Traffic gets congested easily within the shared parking lot and drive-thru.

The hotel was in the middle of a complete re-wallpapering, so there were some inconveniences along those lines. The manager and the staff were courteous, but I was disappointed in the items that weren’t fixed. For my next trip to Brighton, they were only offering the handicapped room again, so I will be elsewhere. The corporate rate is $65, which isn’t bad. The Brighton area needs more hotels.
