The Christian Post reports that a project is underway to build the biggest cross in the world in Nazareth.
According to a statement on Sunday from Bashir Abdel-Razik, the deputy mayor of Nazareth, the building project has not been pitched to the city, however, and that officials have not OK’d the plans. They worry about the surrounding Muslim population in Nazareth – which makes up two-thirds of its 74,000 residents – that may disagree with the cross. Its construction may cause unrest with the religious neighbors.
The Nazareth Cross would be funded with people buying “7.2 million brilliant mosaic tiles.” There is no mention of a tile price on the web site. Even if these tiles cost $1 each, that’s a good chunk of change.
Sticking a huge ostentatious cross in the ground doesn’t convert anybody. It takes pastors spreading the Word of God, who could benefit from this amount of money. That would be a nice amount to sink into seminarian sponsorship, seminaries, and relief organizations such as LCMS World Relief.
