I’m not done tinkering with the new look yet, but I think it’s good enough to go public.
For the WordPress-minded: I’m using a Sandbox theme with a modified CSS template and the normal hacks to get my features to work. It really didn’t take me that long; I was able to do it while I was “on-call” between classes.
Several things about this theme are pretty cool:
- No more annoying scroll bar across the bottom for FireFox users (honestly, that’s what has driven me to make a change all along)
- Two sidebars let me bring more stuff to the top
- The random picture on the right looks a lot better against a black background
- Links across the top bring attention to the permanent stuff
There are a couple of things to work out. I don’t know what I’m going to do with that wide open space in the header. Maybe the Dan Nation Tour goes up there someday.
There are features in this Sandbox theme that I’m not using yet. It looks like this thing does attachments, but I don’t know if I want that.
Anyway, enjoy, and if you see something broken, let me know.

From a strict readability point of view, I liked the old web page. But then I realize there is more the change than that…

I played a lot with the post color, what would look readable with black and green. I will probably loosen up the margins a little too.

Respectfully, Dan, this is really hard on the eyes. I would suggest a dark text on light background instead.

Pastor McCain, thanks for stopping by.
So, you like the post and not the sidebars?

Confused as to whether Pr. McCain liked white on black or black on white, I made it all white on black.

I don’t find it aesthetically as pleasing as the old site either.

Reverted back to the old way. I’ll try to work on a dark-on-light version.

The reason I like the “old” version is because of the way the thread comments show up and the neatness of how the comments tile below the thread. It is easy to follow and easy to read because it is simple, neat and tidy.
With the “new” version, the postings and follow up comments seem to be crammed in between all the other stuff cluttered in the margins. It is harder for me to read the posts and follow through the comments.
The color issues are secondary from my perspective.
