Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid got his cloture vote to end discussion on the immigration bill that was defeated and resurrected. Among the 64 Yea votes was Senator Voinovich, as well as presidential candidates Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Brownback. That’s some company the supposedly conservative Brownback is keeping.

Brownback’s vote is a real shocker. He’s trying to straddle the fence. And we all know usual consequences of that tactic. Stuff like this is going to hurt him more than help.

The idea of granting citizenship to people who could not bother to do things legally boils my beer and I hate to see good beer wasted. I am not against legal immigration and maybe we could stand to make immigration easier again, but I am dead set against rewarding people who have engaged in illegal activities.

Being a resident of the State of Kansas, I have let Senator Brownback know of my displeasure with his votes. Ironically, the slightly more liberal (not by much) Senator Roberts is fighting it tooth and nail. I think I’ll vote for myself next time Brownback runs. RandomDan, for US Senate: he sucks the least.

I’ll vote for you, RandomDan.

I need to take back some of what I said earlier.
It seems that ending the debate by supporting cloture, has left the door open for a final vote that looks like it will kill this stinger of a bill.
Senators like Brownback, who voted for cloture appear willing to now vote against the bill. If the point here is to force a vote, then both sides think they have the votes to either support it or kill it. And right now it appears the GOP has a slight advantage in killing it.
So after complaining about cloture, we may still get what we want, which is for this bill in it’s entirety to be voted down.
