Catching up from a long evening last night and some last minute assignments today:
Visited with Pastor Murray in P.C. & A., which was good.
Christian Education Night was led by Vicar Hanssen, covering a part of the first chapter of Jonah: Some notes:
1:3 Tarshish was on the west coast of Africa, 2500 miles away from Joppa in Israel. Nineveh was 500 miles east, over land into present-day Iraq. One can see the extent Jonah wanted to escape God.
1:4 The storms are narrated as if they had a personality. They continue to get worse and worse throughout the story. “[T]he ship threatened to break up” is literally translated, “[T]he ship had a mind to break up.”
1:5 The mariners were religious, and even pious, praying to their gods, while Jonah wouldn’t pray to God. The Hebrew for “fast asleep” is the same as in Job 4:13, “deep sleep.”
1:6 The mariners understand that the storm is a matter of life and death, but Jonah is unconcerned. Does he know God would protect him? We don’t know.
Memorial then had Vespers, which were new to them because they had recently switched to LSB. The rhythms were just different enough from TLH to throw most people off. I wasn’t perfect, either, but I should have been, having played it enough at home.
After Vespers I headed to Conroe and had a late dinner with Pastor Borghardt. I got back about 11:00pm, too tired to blog. ![]()
