For a little something different I stopped by Dozo Seafood Sake Grill, a Japanese seafood restaurant. Japanese stuff is usually not my first choice, but I’ve never been taught the ways of the East, either. :)

The decor was simple and comfortable. It took a little long to get service, but once I had a waiter, he was friendly, informative, and attentive.

I did not have sushi, but I had some interesting dishes:

I started off with the salad bar, a bowl of miso soup, and some green tea. Both the soup and the tea started off way too hot, but they were good and mild. I don’t know some of the items I ate — maybe you can ID some from the picture — but I was proud not to choke. I’m still not an oyster fan. :)
Next was the calamari. The fried rings were a novel presentation, and they tasted good with the sweet and sour sauce. The menu description said that the rings had yellow curry on them, but I couldn’t taste it. That would have been nice.
The highlight was a surf-and-turf roll. Yellowfin tuna surrounded by rice and thin strips of steak. The steak cooked medium.

The waiter advised me that the green lump on the end was wasabi. Apparently another customer thought it was avocado and popped the whole thing in his mouth. Ouch. In case I’m not the last person on Earth to have wasabi, the spice is like really hot horseradish, but the texture is more like packed confectioner’s sugar. I started slowly and built up. The wasabi was very good with the beef.

All in all, it was pretty cool. Next time I should take someone who knows what they’re doing. Chaplain Boarts, when’s your next trip to the States? :)
