The Newark (OH) Advocate has had good coverage both news and opinion on the ethanol plant that is sought to be built in Newark this summer.

I have mixed feelings on the subject. I am all for new industry in the area; perhaps it means local work for me later down the road. The Ohio EPA seems to have their eyes on the project, and there are people with eyes on the Ohio EPA. Environmental concerns are minimal, consisting of CO2 emissions and smell issues.

On the other hand, the creation of new jobs was due to government mandates and grants for ethanol production. This is an artificial intrusion into the market. There will come a time where the government for whatever reason will not sustain mandates and subsidies. The plant will cease to be profitable, and jobs will be lost. Those in government who make the cuts will get the blame, rather than those in government who made the unsustainable promise in the first place.

Then again, when was the last time we saw government cuts in domestic spending? Maybe employment at the new plant will be a safe bet. :)
