In alumni news…
The University of Missouri-Rolla Chancellor, John F. Carney III, will announce his recommendation to the State of Missouri Board of Curators that UMR’s name be changed to Missouri University of Science and Technology, or Missouri S&T.
Missouri S&T is still too long to be a proper abbreviation. What about MUST? MOST? MST?
must.edu is already taken by an Egyptian university, so perhaps that is out.
most.edu and mst.edu are available.
Perhaps MST would be appropriate, since MST3K was a college staple. ![]()

Are there very many other “S & T”’s out there? I thought UMR was just fine.

I was aware of more A & Ms than S & Ts. I did find some:
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana)
University of Science and Technology of China
Iran University of Science & Technology
Jordan University of Science and Technology
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Hrm. Except for HK and Norway I’m not sure I like that company.

Missouri S&T is an interesting choice. It positions UMR as a much more global and research oriented university. It is a distinctive name in the United States; think Iowa State is the only other S&T in the US. Schools like HKU S&T and S&T of China are recognized as some of the best in the world. I imagine they avoided using Polytechnic because “Polytechs” on an international level are seen as second tier schools. If the name is going to change, this is a pretty good one to choose.
