Happy Reformation Day

In one respect Reformation Day is not a happy day. Church splits are not happy.

What is to be commended is the attempt to return to the Word of God and in doing so relieve Christian consciences of burdens devised by man.

Some prefer to paper over our differences, signing a joint declaration saying that Rome uses certain words in one way, Lutherans use the same words in another way, therefore Rome and the Lutherans surely agree.

The Council of Trent is still in force. I respect Pope Benedict XVI in a lot of things he says, but until we see something to effect of Trent was in error (and not just that we do not suffer the penalties under Trent), and popes and councils can err, then there will always be a split. The Reformation then is a painful but necessary exercise in honesty.

92. Away, then, with all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, “Peace, peace,” and there is no peace!

93. Blessed be all those prophets who say to the people of Christ, “Cross, cross,” and there is no cross!

Blessed Reformation Day to you. Even our brothers and sisters under the pope. :)
