NR Testing Readable Permalinks and Podcast

Anyone who has linked to individual articles on Necessary Roughness (and thank you, by the way) may want to search their posts and see if those links still work. I’ve changed the URL format to go away from those numbered URL which make little sense to URLs with the title in them. This makes the site friendlier to search engines.

Also, you won’t find it in the iTunes Store, but I have set up a podcast feed that you can directly subscribe to through iTunes’s “Advanced->Subscribe to Podcast.” Right now there are seven files that you can download and listen to. The only limitation seems to be that I can only podcast one file per post.

Is there a way to do this without breaking internal links? i.e. to retain some sort of mapping between the old numerical links and the title-based links?

This is one reason why I didn’t switch to WP.com as I’d planned: the export/import process converted all the post URLs, thus causing considerable breakage. Given I already have lots of semi-broken links from when I transferred the site from Blogger, I didn’t want to cause any further problems.

    John H:

What I’ve found is that if your old links had the ?p=151 format, that would always work, but moving from one of the other custom permalinks didn’t work. There’s no real way to hack it with .htaccess either.

Also, John, if you do maintain your own site, go get the Broken Link Checker plugin. It is so easy and helpful that I’ve already fixed all of my links.
