The LCMS Commission on Worship has been sending free copies of a DVD, Children Making Music. I grabbed one for myself.

The DVD has three sections: for kids, for parents, and for congregational leaders. The kids range from about 7 years of age up to high school. Parents, teachers, and pastors extol the virtues of teaching kids music as well as teaching them religious music. They are backed up by music class and performance footage from four LCMS schools, including one of my favorites, Memorial Lutheran School in Houston, TX.

I watched the kids portion with my girls. My younger daughter was more interested in the music than what was being said, of course. The older daughter asked when she could have a violin. Of course she couldn’t choose the piano or the saxophone already in the house.

Every congregation in the LCMS gets the DVD, but you can have one personally mailed to you for free. Each segment runs between 8 and 10 minutes long, and each is worth your time.
