The Associated Press reports that Mike Krzyzewski (pronounced shuh-shef-ski by the locals) will coach the U.S. basketball team for the world championships in 2006 and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
I think the selection of a college coach over an NBA coach is a good step. The rules and enforcement of those rules in international basketball is closer to NCAA basketball than professional NBA basketball. The NBA has deviated from classical basketball enough that players who flourish in the league of the unofficial four-step dribble have a terrible time in the Olympics. I’m sure Coach K has coached in games where the referees call everything and Dick Vitale comes close to having a coronary.
